Scope and Contents

The Anne D. Grulich papers consist of research files, the contents of which include articles; correspondence; interview notes and transcripts; maps; images; reference copies; reports; and research notes. The bulk of the material is dated from circa 2000 to 2010.

Topics addressed in this collection include the early history of St. Mary's Female Seminary; slavery and enslaved persons in Maryland, particularly their relationship to St. Mary's Female Seminary; and a variety of topics related to St. George Island, Maryland (such as erosion on the island).

Other prominent individuals, organizations, and resources in this collection include Agnes Kane Callum’s book, "Slave Statistics of Saint Mary's County, Maryland, 1864"; the Maryland State Archives (MSA); and the Saint Mary's Beacon, three sources that Grulich consulted heavily. Grulich also corresponded with Historic St. Mary's City staff members.

Biographical History

Anne D. Grulich was an employee of St. Mary's College of Maryland from approximately 2003 until at least 2010. In 2008, Grulich served as a Program Specialist for the Maryland Heritage Project, a joint effort of St. Mary's College of Maryland and Historic St. Mary's City to capture and highlight the importance of Maryland history and culture (King 2012, 141). By 2010, Grulich was the Curator of Interpretive Exhibits and Publications Editor for the Office of Public and Media Relations.
