Joseph S. (Jay) Guy papers

 Collection
Identifier: MSS-008

Scope and Contents

Collected scrapbook albums and manuscripts of Joseph S. "Jay" Guy, former St. Mary's County Commissioner. Meticulously assembled and arranged scrapbooks provide a look into the textual and material culture of the life of Mr. Guy, including attending Charlotte Hall Military Academy, attending St. Mary’s Female Seminary-Junior College as one of the few male attendees and drama club member, performing as a pianist in St. Mary’s County, service in the United States Army, performing as a member of a touring integrated Army Choir (including an appearance on a national television program), ownership of Guy Chevrolet in Mechanicsville, serving as County Commissioner (elected 1970), an unsuccessful run for State Delegate in 1978, life as an insurance agent, and retired life in Florida (including working as an employee of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays Major League Baseball team). Mr. Guy was also involved in the St. Mary's County 7th District Optimist Club and the creation of the St. Clement's Island Museum.

Another set of albums concern the genealogy of the Guy and Hammett families and their St. Mary’s County relationships, as Mr. Guy has written two books on this subject. The genealogy albums are neatly sorted by last name, then first name. An electronic copy of Jay Guy's "Gedcom" file from his ancestry.com user account is available in the digital collections of the SMCM Archive.

The books about the Guy and Hammett families are available in the St. Mary’s College of Maryland library. These were published in 2000 and 2001 respectively – it should be noted that the archival collection contains updates of these works in manuscript form.

Collection also includes a transcript of Civil War Navy Records concerning Point Lookout. A bound copy of this transcript is also available in the St. Mary’s College of Maryland library.

A long and informative oral history of Joseph Stanton “Jay” Guy is available in the SlackWater Oral History Collection:

Processing Information

Researchers must use the Finding Aid to find a list of the items in a meaningful order. Due to the bulk of the collection, as well as multiple donations, the physical order does not match the intellectual order.

The headings "Personal manuscripts," "Research manuscripts," and "Writing manuscripts" were provided by the donor.

More material expected.
