 File — Box: 5, shelf: H/3/1

Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Historic Sotterley papers contain materials primarily about the history of Sotterley Plantation ("Sotterley"). The collection consists of architectural materials; biographical sketches; correspondence; deeds; land surveys; obituaries; newspaper clippings; notes; obituaries; photograph albums; publications, such as one book and booklet; and transcripts. The bulk of the material is dated from circa 1890 to 2015.

The collection largely documents the history of Sotterley; its architectural and landscape features; and the lives and experiences of different individuals--including enslaved persons--who interacted with Sotterley over the years. Significant individuals and topics in this collection include the Sotterley Oral History Project, an effort of the Sotterley Education Committee to gather oral histories from individuals who helped develop Sotterley; Chas. A. Howard, a county surveyor who created numerous land surveys of Sotterley and neighboring areas; and the Briscoe, Plater, and Satterlee families, who were involved with the construction or ownership of Sotterley.

Historical Note

Item is not the original patent, as it is not signed by Cecil Calvert, 2nd Lord Baltimore and does not contain his seal. However, it is probably a copy of the patent dating from the time of its creation (1636), which would have been kept by the patent holder, or perhaps may have originally been filed with some other colonial authority. The style of penmanship and letter formation, as well as the paper, lends credibility to the assertion that the copy dates from the 17th Century.

Sotterley is formed from part of the Resurrection Manor patent.

Extent

From the Collection: 2.5 Linear Feet (3 boxes and 4 oversized folders.)

Physical Description

Item is encapsulated in glass in a wooden frame. Sotterley's last private owner, Mabel Ingalls, loaned the document to the Maryland State Archives in 1956 for copying, at which time there was also conservation work performed.
