Disposition of Park Lands, Maryland Constitutional Amendment (Southern Maryland Trail Riders memo), passed in 2006, 2006

 File — Folder: 3

Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

Small set of papers concerning the successful fight to stop a land development that was slated to take place on the Northern portion of St. Mary's River State Park and St. Mary's River Watershed Park in St. Mary's County, west of Indian Bridge Rd. near its Northwestern terminus on Maryland Route 4. The specifics of the development are complex and involve a land developer who sought to build luxury homes and also donate land for the building of a school for the purposes of a tax write-off. This plan was complicated by the fact that some of the land in question was designated for public use and temporarily owned by a conversation group in Virginia (with the intent to sell it back to Maryland at a later date), as well as the transaction’s lack of transparency. There were also zoning questions. The school was eventually built near the site but removed to the Wildwood development, about a mile northwest of the contested land. The public debate surrounding this controversy played a role in the passing of the "Disposition of Park Lands" Maryland constitutional amendment in 2006.
